School Profile

At Queen Ka’ahumanu School (QKS), we are a community of life-long learners with heart. QKS is a Title I school that is centrally located in the heart of Honolulu and serves a community extending from Alapai Street to Punahou Street and from Wilder Avenue to Ala Moana Boulevard.

The school community is surrounded by multi-unit complexes (high rises and condominiums) and many small business establishments. More than two-thirds of the households, mostly middle to low income, are occupied by renters. The student population at QKS is represented by such cultural richness and diversity, with approximately one third from the Pacific Islands.

In meeting the academic, cultural, social, and emotional needs of our students, the school provides an array of comprehensive student supports and services. We implement Social Emotional Learning (SEL) schoolwide using the Choose Love Program. Furthermore, we are committed to providing intervention and supports for our large English Learners (EL) population through our EL program and Newcomer Center. We also offer additional Tier 2 & 3 intervention supports for eligible students through the Response to Intervention (RTI) supports and Special Education program.

It is our priority to promote a school environment in which the child develops into an educated and well-rounded individual. We provide a plethora of educational experiences and opportunities for all our students. At QKS, we use Reading Wonders and Stepping Stones 2.0 as our core curriculum, reinforced by the academic word of the week to develop students’ academic vocabulary. We also use Write Tools and Thinking Maps schoolwide to promote critical writing and thinking skills. In addition to our students experiencing STEM opportunities, all classes participate in the schoolwide annual Science Fair.

At QKS, we value student voice, teacher collaboration, and school design, with our focus on equity and excellence for all. All stakeholder groups (faculty, staff, students, families, and community partners) are committed in collaboratively working together towards school improvement to benefit all students so they are successful and prepared for the work force, college, career, and life.
